If you go down to the woods at night...
On an evening when most people spent an agonising 90 minutes watching England struggle to draw with Algeria, I was out and about in the woods.
We were surveying Nightjars - a strange nocturnal bird which has a tiny beak but a very big mouth for catching moths. The males make a weird, eerie sound called 'churring'. We heard a little bit but our survey squares weren't ideal and it wasn't quite the right night.
Walking around in the dark without a torch is always an interesting experience. Everything goes kind of black and white, you lose perception of distance and you're never sure if it's you doing the watching, or if in fact you're the one being watched.
