Floored!

My eldest son, James was supposed to do two things today.
The first was to get up and sign for a registered package containing some emergency cash plus his post.
The second was to go to his 2:00pm doctor's appointment about the lump he has discovered behind his ear, and then ring us immediately afterwards to tell us any news.
Flick and I rang him continually from about 4:00pm onwards, leaving voice messages and texts. At about 6:30pm he finally deigned to call.

The conversation went something like this:

Dad: "How did it go today?"

James: "Ah, I never went there, I was delivering leaflets instead - for money"

Dad: "What? You know how much your mum and I are worried about this"

James: "Yeah, but I got paid"

Dad: "Bloody marvellous, all year you're unable to get a job, and on the one day you need to visit the doctor's, you find some paid employment"

James: "Funny old life, ain't it?"

Dad: "Did you cancel the appointment properly and make another one?"

James: "..yeah, they're not very busy"

Dad: "Did you make another appointment, James"

James: "umm ..yeah, tomorrow afternoon"

Dad: "Ok. Did you get the registered package we sent yesterday?"

James: "No, the postman came too early. I've got to collect it from the depot after 48 hours"

Dad: "What time did he come then?"

James: "8.45"

Dad: "8.45! That's late"

James: "No it's not, he normally comes at ten"

Dad: "I give up!" "Ok, after your appointment tomorrow, please ring to let us know how it went. If you don't, I'll come over to Leeds and beat you up!"

James: "Are you watching the football tonight, dad? Liverpool are playing, and it's on terrestrial TV ....."
