On the Trail of the Lonesome Pine

Happy 120th Birthday to Arthur Stanley Jefferson.
(The one on the left, for the unfamilliar)

Better known as comic actor Stan Laurel.

He was born in Ulverston Cumbria (formerly N. Lancashire) on 16th June 1890 and lived at 3 Argyll Street.

Emigrating to America in 1912 he changed his name to the now familliar Stan Laurel.

He first appeared on film with Oliver Hardy in the film "The Lucky Dog" (Prod. 1919, Rel.1921), but the formal partnership did not form until the mid 1920's.

They last appeared together in 1955 for the BBC programme Grand Order of Water Rats.

Oliver Hardy died on 7th August 1957
Stan passed away 8 years later on 23rd February 1965, having refused to perform since the demise of his comedic partner.

Ulverston is very proud of it's famous son and has a pub named after him and a museum dedicated to the pair.

This bronze statue, commemorating the duo, is located outside the town's Coronation Hall.

The Laurel and Hardy fan club, Sons of the Desert, regularly visit Ulverston.

The title for this blip is taken from a song in the film Way Out West.

Happy Birthday Stan and thanks for all the laughs you and Ollie brought to the world!
