Grandma, It's For You
Granddaughter Nina was entranced by the phone when she came through from Glasgow with her Mum and Dad today.
The nice pinging noise it made when she pressed the buttons amused her no end.
She really is quite a character and now that she is speaking a little she is very amusing.
Her Mum and I went round the house detailing what needs to go west to their new flat. It's convenient that they are moving to a bigger flat at the same time as our move.
We emptied 2 drawers of material which I have kept since the time of making patchwork quilts and it is now going to some of her artist friends who can use it.
It makes me happy to know that things I don't want to keep are going to people who, although unknown to me, are contacts of the children.
They also took a bike and some art books which lightens the load a little, but as my son-in-law remarked there are still so many little artifacts and pictures left that it doesn't look as though anything has been achieved. I sigh and try not to think about it.
I made a cake this morning for my hosting of the book group tomorrow evening.
I used to bake, mainly birthday cakes for the ever present birthdays when the children lived at home, but now I only bake when I'm stressed (banana cakes!) or when I absolutely have to. And today I had to.
I chose a recipe from a magazine which the author said that her mother found was foolproof as she wasn't a baker. It seemed easy enough although expensive using as it does many egg whites and lots of ground almonds.
When it came out of the oven I was euphoric as it looked wonderful, but needless to say the passage of time has dented it and my optimism.
Now I'm convinced the centre is uncooked and I will be outed as being absoloutely hopeless on the cake front, which is bad enough but I don't like the book either, so there's not much going for me right now.
The suspense of not knowing for sure how catastrophic it is will last for another day. I intend to smother it in raspberries and serve it with creme fraiche and hope nobody notices the damp bits in the middle.
Today has been a bit draining, and his Lordship has offered to make supper using all those left over egg yolks. I think there's also some wine left over from lunch.
Bring it on!
