First cut
Today we cut the first of our fields for silage. It's actually not a very heavy crop, we cut it more so that we can move the sheep onto the field after they are clipped on Monday. In an organic system the idea is that you manage parasites by not keeping them on the same pasture longer than the life cycle of the worms etc; this means moving them about every three weeks.
In the old days cutting the grass, drying it and then stacking it could take months. Now, a man in a tractor comes and cuts it one day, turns it the day after, bales it later and then wraps and stacks the bales the next.
