About half a mile from where the M74 is being built, another Glasgow tower block enters its final days. 54-66 Norfolk Court in the Gorbals is being prepped for demolition, a couple of years after the nearby sisters of Stirlingfaulds Court were pulled down.
Couple of oddities about this one, though. Firstly, its sister block shows no signs of being emptied - there was still much life around it when I passed. Secondly, it's going to be a nerve-racking demo for lovers of the Citizen's Theatre, as it's barely 50 yards from this block!
These grim-looking blocks were completed in 1970: my gran spent her final years, in the 80s, in the surviving Norfolk Court block, thankfully on the second floor. Even then I'm sure it shortened her life by several years.
Reading around (well, on this forum, at least), it seems there's a good reason why the other Norfolk Court block won't be coming down anytime soon. Apparently it's a different sort of steel-framed design and needs specialists from the USA to take it down.
