Love or Loyalty?

Theatre night @ London's Saddler's Wells.

We watched a presentation of Shochiku Kabuki's Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura ("Yoshitsune and the Thousand Cherry Trees"), a highly stylized classical Japanese dance-drama; with this particular tale dating back to the 1700's~

I had no expectations of this whatsoever, but now I'm left in awe at this masterful showpiece. It's not often you get the opportunity to witness something so wonderfully traditional, gorgeous and simply remarkable!

The main synopsis revolves around love & loyalty, but when you also throw in some spirits, dancing, slow-motion fights, and supremely fast costume changes, you get a performance of simply great art.
