True Gentleman?

This plaque prompted a question in my mind:

What is a true gentleman?

Is it one who wears fine clothes and carries himself in public with ostentatious airs and graces?

or:

Is it one who values his loyal friends and treats them with the respect and courtesy they deserve?

Who knows?
