Pentland Road
This lonely road across the centre of the Isle of Lewis links the town of Stornoway to the west coast communities of Breasclete and Carloway. It was designed to be the trackbed of a narrow-gauge railway, which would transport fish from the small port at Carloway to Stornoway for processing. Like so many ventures, proposed by Lord Leverhulme between 1918 and 1925, the railway never came to be, although the trackbed was put down. Only in the last few decades was the track converted to a single-track road.
