My blip yesterday opened a can of worms with many more worms in it than I imagined!
The most important point that I took away from the discussion (thanks to Joe and others) is the simple idea of choice. Blip is great because we can choose what to do with it (and what not to do with it) and how involved we want to get. Most of us don't care if our images are rated and don't bother to rate others. This is fine. Actually it's better than fine, I think it's great that ratings aren't a big deal here.
So messing with ratings is not the best way to try to help uncover diamonds in the rough. There may not be a good way. Inevitably we will all tend to see more of the photo that are posted during our waking hours (and fewer from the other side of the world) and beyond that it's best to just make intelligent use of the subscription system to keep up with your favorite blippers regardless of their geographical position. And it will only continue get more difficult as blip keeps growing.
So I'm going to be pruning down my subscriptions list so I can go through them faster. Blip is taking too much of my time and with the weather improving and work very busy I have no choice but to cut back. I apologize in advance to anyone I unsubscribe. Please don't take it personally.
We keep doing this daily for the love of photography and the blip community. That's the most important thing.
