Spitfire

There was a little bit of a slip in time this evening as a spitfire took to the air above Kirkwall.

Some fantastic aerobatics by both the spitfire and two biplanes. A perfect summer's evening and the shore of the bay lined with people taking advantage of the free display.

When the second biplane left the stage for the appearance of the spitfire, an expectant silence fell as everyone stopped to listen for the distinctive sound of the engine as it growled towards us over the hill. It gave a moment of insight into what it must have been like waiting and listening for these planes coming home from battles in the sky.
