Castle Hill Peak

The Castle Hill peak is the highest in the Torlesse Range. On the right is part of the rock arete that separates it from the Rubicon Peak. The arete and The Gap, clearly seen here, are the distinguishing features of the range when viewed from a distance.

I love an early morning shot taken when the jutting ridges cast ragged shadows across the snow. For most of the day the sun is behind the mountains so that the whole east-facing side is in shadow.

It was a brilliant day, the best for a long while. As I walked around my glistening garden the air was fresh and sweet. Above was a perfect blue dome, and I kept catching surprising glimpses of the snowy mountains. Surprising because except for a couple of hours the day before yesterday they have been covered in low cloud for almost two weeks.

One year ago: Cabbage trees.
