Down the barrel
Yesterday, rain. This morning sun - the rain came later after we were on the road again. Took a bunch of pics but chose this cannon shot today. We toured Ft. Moultrie on Sullivan's Island across the harbor from Charleston, SC.
This fort was originally built in 1776, was 'altered' by battles and destroyed by a hurricane in 1938 but served as a strategic fort protecting Charleston harbor from invasion from its inception (1776) through the second world war in 1943.
Throughout its active days the armament was modernized. This cannon is a very early example of the muzzle loaded type using large iron ball projectiles. It is now a tourist spot and loaded (no pun intended) with history.
