Stream, Redwood Regional Park, Oakland, Ca.
Another of our favorite parks. Most of the redwoods are relatively young and small; the ancient and huge ones are on California's North Coast (Humboldt County). The Oakland hills were heavily logged, particularly during the Gold Rush and after the 1906 earthquake, although there are some good sized trees here. I believe this area was preserved as a park in the 1930s. I hope people have the wisdom to preserve this spot long term so these young trees can thrive and an old growth forest develops.
This is a great park for wildflowers, birds, and wild fungus in the winter. Mountain lions have wandered through here, but they are elusive and avoid people. I've never encountered one, although I've had close encounters with lots of other wild critters. If I ever see a mountain lion I hope I get to blip it!
