Metro Beach
I can't tell if this was the best or worst afternoon ever. I'll let you decide once you read the rest of this write-up. I don't know if it's my own bad luck or if God just wanted me to experience these series of events in the span of one afternoon.
I traveled to Metro Beach, which is about 30 minutes away from my house. The weather was fine when I left...about 87 degrees. The car ride there was amazing; I wore my aviators with the windows rolled down and listened to one of my mixed CDs. I got caught in traffic so it took me about an hour to get there but I was fine with it because the weather was so lovely.
When I arrived, I first saw beautiful Lake St. Clair and loved the gray cloudy view. I met up with my friend Iris there and the minute I found her on the boardwalk, it started raining. We rushed back to the parking lot to get my umbrella from my car because I was definitely not leaving just after arriving. Got the umbrella and good to go, right?! No! It started thunderstorming so we went to find shelter under the food area. I looked down to find a gigantic, dead, and wet dragonfly-looking bug on my arm. Then in an instant, the wind picked up, and water was flying everywhere. The entire food area got flooded with rain and everything got blown away. There was so much rain you couldn't see anything but gray. We were trying to rush into the indoor area and all of the sudden it started hailing and I got hit with some pellets, which is really not a fun experience.
Once in the shelter with a bunch of other people staring out into the gray blur of rain, wind, and food flying everywhere, this random guy comes up and talks to us. He asks us if we're from China (hmmm..) and then was like "So can I give you my number now? To keep in touch? We could be best friends." No thanks.
The cool part, however, was that the storm was directly above us so we could see the lighting striking the lake. I tried so hard to get a picture of it but it'd always come when I wasn't paying close attention. Some people decided to go out and play volleyball in the pouring thunderstorm, which actually seemed like a lot of fun, but probably not that smart of an idea.
After the rain subsided a bit, the sidewalks to the park were completely flooded and so was the parking lot. I wanted to get a picture of the lake so I made Iris walk with me to get this shot. We then decided to leave and since there were SO many cars trying to get out of the park, we stayed in my car for an hour just waiting for the traffic to pass. Even after waiting, it took me an hour and a half to get home. And one hour of that time was just to get within 5 miles out of the park itself.
I am now home (and dry!) and looking back on this wonderful Memorial Day afternoon..
