My Village

Well, this is it - the place I call home.

West Auckland is a lovely little village in south west Durham - small, but it has some memorable historical associations.

For example, did you know that:
Anthony Eden, former prime minister of Britain was born in The Manor House (now a hotel) in West Auckland?
Or that serial poisoner, (and most prolific female poisoner in history) Mary Ann Cotton was arrested whilst living in the village, which was the scene of her last crime? She was later hanged in Durham Gaol.
Or how about that West Auckland won the first ever World Cup? Truly!! And they did it twice (1909 & 1911). At the time it was called The Thomas Lipton Trophy. It's true - look it up!! The village tea room takes its name from the trophy association. The story of the miners who conquered the world was dramatised on TV some years ago, starring Dennis Waterman.

Now, don't I live in a remarkable little place then??
