Old Churches Week - Day 6 - Kantens

Today was a big day for Nienke because it was the first school day after her birthday. She created little treats for her classmates and there were also treats for all the teachers. After school, Nienke goes to the same daycare centre that Ellis and Inge go to because Martine and I both work on Tuesdays. Then disaster struck: she fell on the back of her head. It seems she lost quite a bit of blood and she was very upset. My in-laws picked her up from the centre and I drove home from work immediately after I received the news. Luckily, she was feeling a lot better when I arrived but she does have a rather impressive wound on the back of her head.

I had planned to drive to Kantens straight from work for todays blip but obviously that was a very low priority compared to the situation with Nienke. When the children were in bed I was able to make the trip and the bright side of it all is that the church looks really great in the evening sun as you can see.

The church was built around 1200 and the oldest parts (the west part and the lower part of the tower) are still original. The Romano-Gothic eastern part is a bit older (mid 13th Century) and the upper part of the tower dates back to around 1500. In the tower there are two bells: one made in 1437 and one made in 1660. To prevent leaning of the tower, a large triangular abutment with arch was built against it.
