Ahead of the pack
The route of Edinburgh Marathon includes the road along Leith Links - last year we stood for about 45 min before we could cross over on the way up to the allotment while something like 13,000 runners pounded/staggered past us.
This year we remembered to get across earlier, but still stood and watched for a while. All human life was there. There must have been people sponsored for every charity I've ever heard of and some that I haven't. Variously clad in kilts, as Batman, as a chicken, cross-dressed, party frocks, etc etc. Some looked decidedly unlike marathon runners and I would think there were quite a casualties along the road once the sun came out. At this point in the route they had only done about three miles, but the elite runners were ahead of the pack. This was one of the first female runners I spotted.
