Toasting Marshmallows at the Burning Hill.
This is Yanar Dagh - the burning hill - on the edge of Baku. It's a place where natural gas seeps up through the ground and has apparently been burning ever since a shepherd's cigarette set it alight in the 50's. We had champagne here on my birthday, we are planning to have mince pies and mulled wine here at Christmas, and tonight we came for a friend's leaving do. This friend being American we were toasting marshmallows and making smores - my first experience of them and they were pretty good. The locals come to have tea here. They don't tend to toast anything in the fire so we must have made an odd sight. Even odder to our minds though were the tour group (Russian speaking) that turned up in suits and evening wear; one woman in a silk jumpsuit and high heels, the heels of which appeared to be light bulbs. I should have got a photo of that but I didn't quite dare!
