Fossil Grove
This will be one of the oldest things featured on Blip.
No not me, the picture!
These trees were alive and growing 100 Million years before the first dinosaur and long before birds and mammals evolved. The geography of the world was a lot different than it is today. Scotland was close to the equator and tropical forests stretched across what is now North America, Britain and northern Europe. Plant debris decayed and over time turned into coal.
The Fossil Grove was discovered in 1887 during the creation of Victoria Park in Glasgow. Whilst cutting through a disused quarry workmen found the tops of the fossilised tree stumps. Their importance was quickly realised and they were carefully excavated and protected.
Not the most exiting picture but hopefully it is of some interest.
