The Dog That Picked Her Own Name.
Meet our dog, Poppy.
She's a rescue dog, part Labrador/Spaniel/Border Collie/who knows what, and we've been lucky enough to have her for almost 12 years now. She came home with us and we didn't like her name, she was called Sally but she didn't answer to that at all. Hubby had a boss called Sally that he wasn't too keen on so a name change was in order.
I sat in the back of the car with this (then 6 months old) dog on my knee going through all the names we'd thought of for a dog. I said each name clearly, Rosie, Daisy and so on, the pup never moved. Poppy, I said and she looked up and tried to lick my face and so it was decided that if she responded to that name then she'd picked her own name :-)
She's a good dog most of the time, she's certainly very handy when strangers come knocking at the door in the dead of night as she has a loud and scary bark. I'm not sure what might have happened the night that guy knocked on my door way past midnight wanting a lift, hubby was at work, there was no one else around but the dog soon chased him off, thank goodness! Truth is when you get to know her she's softy ;-)
