IN AUNTIE'S GARDEN

This callalily, or Arum lily, is just unfolding and was a single, last-minute shot after taking a dozen of bearded iris. (I must learn to do flowers at least half as well as others on Blip.)

What we have is an "auntie's garden." This is what people call a mish-mash of plants brought as gifts and not only that but stuck into the ground for you, often without your knowledge. "Where did that come from?" is a common question when some new plant appears in the spring.

This lily was brought by a wonderful woman who does freelance cooking. The row of bearded iris I meant to upload just appeared. I have no idea who planted them.

Flat land upon which to plant anything is scarce when you live on steep hillside. I had a narrow strip saved for annuals. Several years ago I walked past it and was stunned to see it had been planted to new roses, still quite twiggy. I watched, owlishly, to see what they were. I imagined a riotous mix of brilliant colours.

I was wrong. They were pure white and absolutely beautiful. I do know who put them there. It was a jobbing gardener we have in from time to time. He stuck some weird and wonderful things around and about. There are some I wish he hadn't but I am most grateful for the white roses.

I will blip them later but here they are last year together with self-seeded white
foxgloves. WHITE ROSES WITH FOXGLOVES
