Dredging For Almejas And Tellinas.
These two men are out in the surf early every morning with their hand held dredgers - long tanged rakes with nets behind - that they drag through the sand and collect the almejas (clams) or tellinas (smaller butterfly clams) that are buried about 10cm underneath.
It's heating up now here so they aren't in the full wetsuits that they wear in the Winter months. They are often waist deep in the water and it's hard work.
Cullera is well known for it different types of clams which are fried open with oil, garlic and parsley and are a very popular tapa.
I photographed the two of them returning from a break on the beach - the satchels around their waists are for the collected shells which are sold locally for the lunch time menus.
