Pyramid tomb

I walk past here most days and often stop to look through the railings at this unusual tomb in the graveyard of the disused St Andrews Church in Rodney Street, Liverpool. Local legend has it that wealthy engineer William McKenzie, a notorious gambler, made a pact with the Devil to ensure he got a winning hand during a poker match. The price of course was his soul and when he became ill shortly afterwards he believed that the Devil might come to claim his dues. He left instructions that on his death he was to be encased in a pyramid, sitting upright at a table with the winning cards, in the hope that if he was not buried underground the devil could not take him.

Much of this is speculation I think, but there are some weird and wonderful web sites describing the site and the things that go bump in the night there. I like to take visitors here, especially on dark winter evenings, and embellish the tale with a few lurid details.
