Great Barford Lock & Bridge

Another stopping place before work, this time Great Barford. A great place to take a stroll along the River Great Ouse in the morning. The early fifteenth century Barford Bridge can be seen in the background, in all there are 17 arches originally built from limestone and sandstone. The bridge underwent significant changes in the 19th century, with a widening project in 1818 that used wood being superseded in 1874 with the use of brick. It is Grade I listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The lock here was restored in the mid 70's at a cost £190,000 as part of the work to make The Great Ouse navigavble from Bedford to the sea.
