Stupid, stupid, stupid (part 2)
It was, I admit, a stupid mistake not to have run ethernet cable all over the house at the point when there were no ceilings or walls in the way. Wireless networks are all very good but much slower than cables and when you're proposing opening and editing large files, backing up large amounts of data and streaming audio and, on occasion video, the absence of cabling is an annoyance. Still, it's not beyond resolution since the complete absence of skirting boards anywhere in the house and the lack of floor coverings in most of the house means there are plenty of nooks to hide cables in and any damage caused by drilling holes will eventually be hidden behind a piece of wood or a piece of carpet.
First, I need to get the server working. I can't help thinking that Apple has made a big mistake in not creating a much simpler interface for their server software so that amateurs with more files than networking experience or small businesses with no network experience can get a simple filer server / backup thing up and running without having to rummage around in the guts of permissions. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I kind of expected it to be like most Apple hardware and software and to just work out of the box, leaving you to explore and tweak later, once you knew broadly what was happening and with a door to the magic kingdom if you really did know what you were doing. I can't believe I've had to read the manual.
