Was It Really So Long Ago

From a Welsh Hillside

A view from the old tramway high on a Welsh hillside. It's a good one thanks to the best of three days weather in Wales over the weekend. It needed to be too. We'd climbed just under 300m over a horizontal distance of under 1km. Fancy walking up a 1:3 incline for that distance? Why did we think it was a good idea? Lets just say some ideas born from a discussion round a pub table just seem like good ideas at the time.

Nevertheless, I'm very glad we did. The view on this fine day was spectacular. Clearly visible on the horizon are the other two peaks we'd climbed on the previous days. Around a third from the left is Sugar Loaf and just right of centre, Skirrid.

The mountain of choice today is called Blorenge. Apart from being one of the few words in the English language to rhyme with orange (we couldn't think of any others) it is interesting as having the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal running round it, a tramway used to move iron ore and a gravity incline to ship the ore to the canal below.

Just above the canal we met Joanna. She's a Kiwi on a tour of England looking for directions to the peak and a lengthy chat about us, her and her travels. It was a welcome break, one of a few we made on the ascent.

I've taken a series of shots, stitched together and unashamedly edited (tonal mapped) to bring out the best of the spring shades and the clouds in the sky. I hope you like it.
