Breaking up
Broxtowe is a marginal seat and Ashcroft's money has been poured in to support the Tory candidate's efforts to oust the sitting Labour MP. It's too close to call.
Nick, gave those of us on his e-mailing list a brief insight into 'what happens to MPs when and election is called'. I'm working from memory here, so apologies for possible inaccuracies:
Once parliament is dissolved, MPs cease to be MPs and have to rapidly clear their offices in the Houses of Parliament. The whole building, including tea-rooms and bars becomes 'off limits'. So Nick left there and unless he wins on Thursday, that's that. He even had to change his email address because it had MP after his name.
That leaves Government ministers running the country. Good job there have been no crises...
It must be a very strange way to have a career change, both for those who are not re-elected and for those beginning their political career; so I do spare some of them a thought.
