head ache from above

We have developed a crack in the ceiling of our living room in our 70+ year old home.
Now the head ache for a man who is all thumbs to try and fix it. This view is from our 2' high crawl space. The black stuff is debris that fell here when the PROs re-roofed our home 15+ years ago.
