Victorian pleasures

We were at this beach today, Saunton Sands, in North Devon. Everything around here harks back to the past - from the 'faded Victorian splendour' of Ilfracombe (which is actually a bit of artistic licence if you ask me, because it's seriously depressed) to the Saunton Sands hotel, a 1930s monument to the days when British people scampered off to the coastal resorts. It's had its heyday but they're doing a good job in giving the Daily Mail, Telegraph reading, UKIP supporters a place to hang out between games of golf.

On the beach, it's a change of scene, with the young dreadlocked, surfers in their VW camper vans out on the waves. And what a strange hazy shades-of-grey day it was, very beautiful somehow.

Finished today off with a whopping over the top cream tea. Can feel the arterial pain even now.
