Relay for Life

Relay for Life is a 12 hour fundraiser supported by the American Cancer Society in communities and colleges across the world. Its goal is to celebrate the lives of those who have beaten cancer, remember those who have lost their battle to cancer, and fight back so that we can put an end to the nasty disease.

They lay out a track at the event site and the goal of the participating teams is to have somebody walking the track for the entire 12 hours.

There are three ceremonies: an opening ceremony where we honor cancer survivors, a fight back ceremony, and a Luminaria ceremony.

This was taken right after the Luminaria Ceremony. The purpose of this ceremony is to remember those that we have lost to the disease. All lights are shut off and the luminaria (that you see placed around the track) are lit. Everybody participating in the event walks a silent lap. During the ceremony, an alumni spoke about losing his son to cancer and our female ensemble, The Sirens performed "The Rose". It was an amazing ceremony and definitely my favorite part of the night.

The event went really well and my college raised $44,000 for the American Cancer Society.

I was on the committee to run Relay for Life this year and it was an amazing thing to be part of. This is a great cause. If you get the opportunity to participate in the event or to donate to someone who is participating, you definitely should!

Okay, the novel ends here! =]
