Evinston's historic Post Office

The Wood and Swink Old Store and Post Office is Florida's oldest Post office and one of the last working general store/ post offices in the nation. The old wood stove, where locals still gather to sit around and chew the fat is till there, as are the original PO grill and 16 brass PO boxes, just as they were when the store opened in 1882. The Wood family have owned the store since 1906, and the present Post Mistress is wanting to retire, but is worried about the future of the listed building. The Conservation Trust for Florida hosted the first Evinston 'En Plein Air' Paintout, in 2006, to raise funds to bring the building up to the necessary PO standards for the USPS to renew their contract, and place a Perpetual Conservation Easement on the acre plot, to preserve the character of Evinston, and ensure that the building and property say as they are for ever. The fourth of these events was held this weekend, to raise the remainder of the necessary funds.
