Sad And Young

Season Two

We traded books like kisses
or compliments. We shared paperbacks
the same way I used to share
a breakfast of hot potatoes, eggs, toast,
and coffee with my ex-girlfriend. Her
soup and salad were always accompanied with
iced tea. This was La Chatelaine on
a Sunday morning with the sun warming
our backs, our guts relaxing, eyes opening
from a heavy Saturday night. Those
freeze-frames of love are so telling
of what was; a measuring stick.
She was a different genre next to my friend.
I used to spend time with her
and read her favorite novel between classes
on wooden benches and aging couches.
Like the stories we were reading
our movie still of friendship was
going to change. It glared at us
like the final chapters of a careening plot
development. After those last days
I no longer see her, my friend. This
is the sequel. This
is the next installment, with
similar characters, different script.
