Book Club, part 6
We got this month's book from the public library's "Gab Bag" program, which are multiple copies of one book, packaged in a tote bag and checked out for six weeks. Many of them have questions to prompt discussion and sometimes other supplementary items (like a map or photos).
It's a great program, and there are many many titles to choose from. Our group utilizes it every other month or so and it's so convenient not to have to scrounge around for a copy of the book every time. I happened to meet a program director from the library at a party last Fall, and I mentioned how much I liked the Gab Bags. It turned out that they were HER idea so of course she was very proud of it, and hopefully it encouraged her to continue to push for more books. :)
Anyhoo, our pick this time was Don't Lets Go to the Dogs Tonight. I love books about Africa (like The Poisonwood Bible) and this was definitely an interesting read, although her writing style is kind of jagged and chaotic and sometimes hard to follow. I think she was trying to channel her crazy African childhood into book form, and for this the format worked well. A really fascinating account.
PS: how creepy is this picture on the front?? Yipes.
