back to front?

This is an old milestone/monument a few miles outside Exeter on the almost abandoned old part of the A30. If you drive along the brand new dual carriageway you can just glimpse the monument on the old road tucked down almost underneath the concrete structure of the bigger, faster, noiser A30. (Sorry, that's a local gripe!) Anyway, it was knocked down some years ago and rebuilt by the community but I've got a sneaky feeling that it was rebuilt back to front. Don't milestones usually show the distance to the place that you're heading for - not where you've just come from?

Anyway, it's a lovely old weathered monument and at least it WAS rebuilt and not left as rubble.
