Not a good day

I woke up with a very painful hand this morning. We headed to my Mom's house for brunch and afterwards, we were supposed to bring her patio table and chairs to our house. But Murphy's law was most certainly with us today.

James' car had a flat tire. When he took all of the lug nuts off the wheel, the wheel would not come off the car - it was rusted on. He and Tom kicked it, tugged on it. They even put the lug nuts back on loosely and rolled the car back and forth a little. It was still stuck. We waited over an hour for the AAA guy, who, when he finally arrived, gave the wheel an tremendous kick or two with his heavy boot and knocked the wheel off in less than 5 minutes. James and Tom then went to the local shop to have the tire repaired.

Finally, three hours later, we thought we were ready to go when a gust of wind knocked the patio table top on to one of my Mom's dogs (Maggie) who was laying down on the deck. When I checked her out, her gums were pale and bleeding, her pulses were not great, and the bones on her left knee felt worrisomely strange. Worried that she was in shock, we drove to the nearest emergency clinic, rather than my clinic an hour away. By the time we arrived, though, her color had pinked up and she seemed to be feeling better. In fact, the left knee was where she had her patellar surgery 3 years ago. How terrible that I am so engrossed in my own specialty (internal medicine) that I couldn't figure out that her knee is normally like that because of the surgery. So she was fine. Phew.

We were all exhausted after this crazy day. Then I got one of the worst migraines of my life. Fortunately, my meds worked and it was better by morning. Oh, what a day.
