The Alamo by night
This morning we visited the Alamo and joined a guided tour which was very informative. Then it was an early lunch on the Riverwalk, followed by a walk along the Riverwalk to La Villita, a lovely area of boutiques, craft shops and restaurants, resembling a Spanish/Mexican village, with shaded patios, plazas and brick-and-tile streets. Then we went on to the Tower of the Americas, which was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World's Fair, HemisFair '68. All around the base are a series of beautiful water features, which were all dry last year because of the drought, but I was so happy to find them all working this year, using recycled water. The cathedral was next on our tour, followed by a walk along the newer stretch of the Riverwalk which was opened shortly after our visit last year. We took the River taxi back to the central area of Riverwalk where all the restaurants are and decided it was time for a margharita. Having enjoyed our drink, we decided we may as well stay and have an early dinner, as we wanted to go back and see the tower by night. However, we got back there a bit too early, and even having watched the 4-D movie Skies over Texas at the base, we still had a while to wait for the sun to go down, so we didnt actually wait until it was totally dark. We went for another stroll along the Riverwalk to enjoy it by night, bought ourselves an ice-cream from Haagen Daz and saw the Alamo by night, then headed back to the hotel, where Roger, Jen and I played some Boggle before going to bed.
