Good Friday: The 'Great Church' At Bremerhaven
This picture was taken inside the Mayor Smidt Memorial Church at Bremerhaven. It was named after city founder Johann Smidt, and the ceremonial opening took place in 1855. The citizens of Bremerhaven simply call the church 'Big Church' ('Große Kirche').
The model of a tall ship above the font points out the fact that Bremerhaven, founded in 1827, was, and in some degree still is, a seafarer's town, and the main church in town is therefore a seafarer's church.
