Gull in Shallow Water

The skating rink in front of Toronto's City Hall is now a shallow pond. Soon they will turn the fountains on, but in the meantime the gulls were perfectly reflected in the still water.

Leslie Street Spit in Toronto is home to one of the largest Ring-billed Gull colonies in the world with over 100,000 gulls. That's HUGE. I guess Toronto has a lot of garbage to eat.

The spit started out as a dump for construction waste but after 20 year and with some help from the conservation agency it is covered with trees and shrubs and grass. Gulls, cormorants and black-crowned night herons compete for living space. Even more amazing to me are the coyotes and beavers that have found it. They have crept in from miles around to make a home in the middle of the city.

It makes me feel hopeful for our planet that nature can take over in such a short time if allowed.
