Gushet 1 - St.Andrew's Cross
A Gushet building (it's a Scots word) is one which stands where two roads split at a tight angle. New York has a particularly impressive one called the Flatiron Building, though I suppose they wouldn't use the term "gushet".
Anyway, Glasgow has a few left in the traditional sandstone tenement style, and this is the one at Eglinton Toll. It has fond memories for me as a kid, as my grandparents lived in Gourock Street nearby and we caught our bus home at the bus stop on the left of the picture. This connects also to Saturday's blip, as my Uncle Ian grew up in this area.
The pub at the bottom was (in)famous for a while in offering a three-course meal for £1.50 - in the early 90's! I've never been in it but it's a well-kent haunt of bus drivers finishing their shifts, given Larkfield Depot is also nearby (BTW, how many southsiders are aware of the plans to turn the bus station into a supermarket?
Final bit of trivia: there was a church on the diagonally opposite corner, roughly where the grassy wedge is now.
Final final bit of trivia: you can just see the blue girders of the M74 Eglinton Viaduct at the left. In a few weeks, you'll be able to see them at the right too...
