Sisters

This morning we had a very early start for an appointment across the other side of Vegas and as it was quite a chilly morning the girls were cosied up in their car seats ready to go. The two little quilts were made by myself and a friend and were used in NICU when my son and daughter-in-law were able to enjoy holding their tiny infants in "kangaroo care" while the monitors were still attached. The quilts then more than amply covered the babies and now they are a perfect size for the car seats. This morning's appointment was for a specialist to check on the retinas of both girls as they had developed a fairly common problem associated with preemies, called ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). The girls have been having regular checks on the development of new blood vessels in the retinas and today we were told that things were definitely improving. The test itself is very stressful for the girls and they have to be tightly swaddled to ensure they don't move during the delicate examination of the backs of their eyes. Naturally they screamed through the whole process but after some comforting cuddles from Mummy and granny, the two bottom pictures show them sleeping peacefully in their car seats waiting to get home. Despite being fraternal twins they are very, very alike and at the moment we know the difference as L is almost 9lbs and R just 7lb 7oz and still has little patches to hold the oxygen cannula when she needs a boost - which she did on the way home today as she had been so upset.
