Hedge apples

I found these in the ditch this morning. These are the fruits of the hedge tree that I was talking about the other day. It would have been helpful to have provided a scale, but they are about 4 inches across. They really are this bright yellow. The one in the bottom right is beginning to disintegrate. The leaves are redder than they should be but the hedge apples look right! Weird!
Some people collect these things and keep them in their closets to prevent moths. This is a fairy tale!!
