Not so Golden Lion
The building of the harbour at Seaham was started in 1828. In 1829 the first house and premises to open was the Golden Lion public house. It is said that the Hangman and executioner for Durham gaol used to stay there. Two miles away on a hill top there was a gallows and the road to it is still known as Hangman's Lane.
The Golden Lion closed in 2007 becoming one of a number of abandoned public houses in this small town.
