Omar Sharif, one of the all time greats of the silver screen, embraces Dd in Cairo tonight. We met him in the Italian restaurant that we have long been led to believe belonged to his son. Dd was in the loo when an extremely distinguished man came in and put his jacket over the back of a chair at the table beside us. I saw who he was immediately and the people at the other tables took only a few seconds more to cotton on. Within a moment everyone was approaching him for a portrait for their family albums. Mr. Sharif was not only gracious in agreeing to be photographed with everyone who asked but also very amiable throughout. We had a few minutes with him talking about life in Hollywood and Paris and Cairo. Dd was also thrilled to exchange a few smiles with him during our meal, as anyone would be. Pity she was only four years old when Dr. Zhivago was made!
