Verdun : first and last

This monument is called L'Europe pacifiée a Haudiomont. It stands beside an unremarkable service area on the A4 motorway in France, and honours four men with a unique place in history.
The names of the first French and German soldiers to be killed in the Great War are commemorated, together with the names of the last French and German veteran of the war to die.
It stands just beside the car park, where hundreds of motorists stop every day on their way to or from the ferry ports. I hope some of them take time to read and remember.
