Since everyone's been told now about Kit's engagement to Izzy I can post this picture I took a few weeks ago when we were in Oxford getting Izzy's ring resized, I know it's not in the spirit of the blip picture a day philosophy but I wanted to post it anyway.
I was back at the Churchill today for another session with the pain clinic, unfortunately the delays at my GP surgery mean I'm not as far along the drug reduction path as planned so there wasn't as much to talk about as there might have been. The worst thing about the Churchill is the long walk from the main entrance to the clinic, exhausting and painful...several people in their waiting room when I got there were waiting for porters to come with wheelchairs and trundle them back to their cars, the trip in having overcome them. I wonder if the seemingly disorganised, warren like layout of the place is the result of its piecemeal history, unlike most of our hospitals which were planned as such from the start (even if those who designed them couldn't have foreseen the huge expansion that would be required) the Churchill started off as a temporary facility set up in 1940 to treat casualties from the luftewaffe's air raids and from the Battle of Britain, later it was handed over to the US forces in anticipation of the massive casualties from D Day and the invasion of Europe, over the years the creation of the NHS and the increasing need meant it never closed but was added to and added to and rebuilt piecemeal, the Nissan huts and temporary wards are long gone but the legacy lives on as does the suffering and human drama within its walls, now mainly inhabited by cancer patients.
