Don't Take The Power Away

When we first moved here we both felt quite pleased with ourselves as we believed we had sufficient contingency plans in place for when the island had power cuts (oh, it does). Items such as a job lot of rechargeable site lamps (really good, light up a room and bright enough to read by), a multi-fuel stove in the sitting room as a backup to central heating and, importantly, a gas-fired stove so we could have a cup of tea. But my favourite thing is something I've had for over 10 years and also the most boring. It's an anti-surge UPS, as seen above. Not only is it useful for giving me time to shut down PCs and NAS boxes when the power goes but very handy for attaching the PVR to, i.e. you're recording a programme, power cuts out and this allows you to continue recording for another 90 minutes. Great, eh? This is technology I can't live without and there's several dotted around the house. And one in the byre for the other freezer there.

Apparently it's been a bad weather day. Well, we did have a 4 hour power cut this morning and another hour long this afternoon plus Internet connectivity vanished for several hours after we got power back after the latter but I didn't think the winds or the sea were that bad here. Although the sea was boiling white I've definitely seen much higher waves.

I think we've been lucky.
