What? Why?

This is the drive to the entrance of a nearby farm. A few weeks ago these bales of straw were placed blocking the drive, presumably to stop anyone driving up to the house. The shutters are still open though, but there is no sign of the dogs or the old man who used to drive down to the village in a little blue electric car.
What does it mean? Clearly something has happened, but we don't know what.
