Dry stone walls..

Living in Arnside one is surrounded by many miles of dry stone walling.

If you take into account the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, Wales and the west of Scotland there are hundreds, probably thousands of miles of them. But look carefully for they are quite different in each region. Not only is the stone different- limestone here, sandstone, granite and even slate elsewhere - the building techniques vary from region to region.

On the Westmorland County Showground, just off J36 of the M6, a permanent exhibition of dry stone walling has been built. Here there are 14 different walls representing all the main styles in the U.K. It is a most interesting display.

Having seen it I shall take much more notice of the many walls I see as we travel round the country.
