A Little Older, A Little Wiser
The first time we bought the kids an advent calender, oh so many years ago, Valerie looked at it and said to Arthur, all sweetness and light, "I'm sure you would like to eat the first chocolate, wouldn't you?" "Yes please," he beamed. Valerie admitted later that she had worked out that whoever opens the even numbered doors would get the big chocolate behind the twenty-fourth window.
This year, Arthur waited until Valerie was in the bath to say to me, "Daddy, can you let Valerie open the first window?" This evening, Valerie started an apropos nothing complaint that Arthur had cheated by making that request when she was not around. This from the girl who made her Vice Presidential High School Council election speech today! I always knew politicians were greedy!
